Plastic lawns grow in popularity
October 7, 2009
A resident of Brentwood has started to receive distressing messages from people who are angry at the fact that she managed to scoop first prize in the Brentwood in Bloom competition. Other contestants are furious because Jan Brooker’s perfect lawn was actually made from plastic.
But could plastic lawns be the way ahead for those less green-fingered gardeners? As Good As Grass is the market leader in the U.K for artificial lawns and managing director Anthony Ashcroft says that gone are the days of abrasive Astroturf. The modern fake lawns are made of much softer nylon and polyethylene which means that even small children can crawl around on them comfortably. The fake grass now even looks realistic and customers can choose between a range of colours and textures.
Over the last year the fake grass industry has grown by 20 percent in the U.K. and with prices of up to £30.00 per square meter the artificial grass seems to have weathered the recession well.
However the editor of Amateur Gardening magazine, Tim Rumble has compared fake lawns to the devil and says that although it may look nice it is still made of and feels like plastic.
