Pilot killed and passengers injured in Thailand air crash

On Tuesday afternoon, a Bangkok Airways plane skidded off the runway at the airport on the popular Thai island of Koh Samui, crashing into a disused control tower. One of the pilots was killed and six others on the plane sustained injuries.
The accident occurred when flight PG 266, which departed from the Krabi, Thailand airport, was landing is severe weather conditions at around 2:00pm.
Officials at the Koh Samui airport reported that the aircraft skidded off the runway on landing, striking the airport’s old control tower.
At a press conference later in the afternoon, Capt Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, the president of Bangkok Airways, said that the ATR-72 500 plane was carrying 68 passengers, two flight attendants and two pilots.
All passengers were foreign nationals, visiting Thailand from countries including Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
One of the plane’s two pilots was killed in the crash and six people were injured. Four were reported to have sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Bangkok Samui Hospital. The two passengers with minor injuries were taken to the Thai Inter Hospital, according to the airline president, who added that the remaining passengers were taken to their hotels.
The Bangkok Airways executive did not say what caused the crash, waiting for the results of an investigation to be conducted by a team from the Department of Aviation.
