Peter Robinson takes time out from Northern Ireland Assembly

January 12, 2010

First minister of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Peter Robinson has issued a statement in which he claims all allegations against him are untrue and that he will be stepping aside for the time being in order to concentrate on being a father and a husband. He has handed the reigns over to enterprise minister Arlene Foster. Mr. Robinson also announced that his wife was undergoing psychiatric treatment.

Arlene Foster made it clear as she spoke to the Assembly that her position was a temporary one and that Mr. Robinson would return after clearing his name. The furore at Stormont started when it was revealed that Mr. Robinson’s wife who was MP for Strangford and a member of the Assembly was having an affair with a nineteen year old man. It then emerged that Iris Robinson had managed to raise £50,000 from two developers to set her young lover Kirk McCambley up with a restaurant business. Mr. Robinson claims that although he had been made aware that his wife had been having an affair with the teenager he did not know of the money she had obtained to set him up in business.

An inquiry is set to look into the matter but in the meantime the Democratic Unionist Party has said that they are prepared to stand by their leader. Nigel Dodds, the party’s deputy leader said in a statement that the DUP was determined to offer its support to Mr. Robinson despite opponents and members of the press calling for his resignation.
