Patrick Swayze dies

September 15, 2009

Actor Patrick Swayze died yesterday aged 57 after a twenty month battle with pancreatic cancer. Annett Wolf, Swayze’s publicist said that he passed away peacefully at his Californian ranch on Monday with his wife and brother at his side.

At the beginning of 2008 Swayze was given just months to live by doctors but managed to prove them wrong by battling on for almost two years. In his last interview for television he told ABC audiences that he was going to fight the cancer but that he was not going to chase staying alive as that’s one way of forgetting how to live.

Swayze will be most remembered by legions of fans for films like Dirty Dancing in which he played dance instructor Johnny Castle opposite Jennifer Grey. The actress said that she will always remember Swayze for his masculinity and grace and remembered the hours spent trying to perfect ‘that lift’ in a freezing lake and how much fun they had together making a film they thought nobody would ever see. He will also be fondly remembered for Ghost in which he starred opposite Demi Moore. It won him the award for sexiest man alive in People Magazine. Moore said that she will miss him but that his light would shine on forever. Swayze went on to play opposite Keanu Reeves in the surf classic Point Break.

Swayze was a trained dancer who could never really come to terms with the fact that he was always being cast as a hunk. He reportedly turned down $7million to star in a Dirty Dancing sequel. He fought for his role in Ghost because he thought it would get people to see him as an actor and not just an action guy.
