Paris Hilton cleared of making film flop

August 19, 2009

The now defunct Worldwide Entertainment Group has failed in its bid to get Paris Hilton to pay $8.3 million (£5 million) in damages for breach of contract.

The producers of National Lampoon’s Pledge This! accused Ms Hilton, who appears in the film and has an executive producer’s credit, of not fulfilling her contract. They claim that the film has been a flop because she did not adequately promote it when it was launched to DVD.

In a Miami court, US District Judge Federico Moreno said on Monday: “Any causal connection between Ms Hilton’s alleged breaches and the financial ruin of the film are wholly speculative.” Instead he blamed the film’s lack of success on its “inexperienced” producers.

Court documents allegedly show that the film played in only 25 cinemas in the U.S. and only managed to make $3 million (£1.8 million) on its worldwide release.

Judge Moreno said that he would be prepared to hear from investors if they wanted to put forward arguments for Ms Hilton to repay some of the $1 million (£607,493) she was paid to appear in the film; but regarding the charge of breach of contract he upheld Ms Hilton saying that the filmmakers had obviously sent “scattershot requests to their principal star in the hopes that she could find time to promote a sinking ship.”
