Online sales up in July

August 26, 2009

IMRG Capgemini, a retail research group, has just released new figures showing that online spending was up in July.

Compared with June IMRG said that sales had hit £4.2 billion, a rise of 15.7%. Clothing sales were mainly responsible for the increase. IMRG’s Tina Spooner said that this was down to web sites becoming better at getting browsers to actually buy, rather than just window shop. “It is evident that online merchants are becoming more sophisticated in their marketing efforts and e-mail communications to their customers, the result of which can be seen in higher conversion rates, particularly in the clothing sector,” she said.

Websites involved in the poll reported that one in fifteen people visiting their sites was making a purchase. The rise in online shoppers showed increased confidence. June’s sales figures were down 1.3% compared to May.

One sector not to show improvement was alcohol. Some point to the disappointing summer weather, saying that alcohol sales dropped as barbeques were cancelled.

Websites are driving sales with offers and large discounts on their products. Electrical sales also saw a rise in July of 11% over a month earlier. However it seems that many who browse the internet are not shopping because they fear the system will not work.
