Online retailers prepare for Christmas
August 28, 2009
It may still be August but online retailers are already looking forward to Christmas to make sure that trading over the period will go smoothly.
Retailers agree that with so much competition it is the ones that can provide the smoothest service that are going to come out on top as more and more consumers turn to the net for their shopping.
Predictions for growth in spending are cautious, but there is no doubt that online retailers will see a rise in those browsing their sites. Internet analyst, Alex Burmaster says: “In terms of visitors we are expecting it to be the biggest Christmas yet, but it is difficult to say on volume and value.”
Retailers are also predicting that this year the peak in trading could be later than last year. Usually it comes at the end of November and that beginning of December, but most expect the peak now to occur later into the last month of the year, and retailers will be expected to deliver.
Paul Mohan, operations director of the Home Delivery Network said: “Last year we found that Christmas came sharper and later. In the last four weeks of 2008 we delivered about 500,000 more parcels than in the previous year. The busiest week was a week later and the busiest day was four days later than the year before.”
He expects that this year the peak will be pushed another week later than last year.
