Oasis breaks up over brothers’ row

August 31, 2009

Noel Gallagher has reportedly quit Oasis, posting a statement on the rock band’s website that he could not continue working with his brother Liam “a day longer”.

A source close to the band said the brother had a fight backstage before they were to perform at the Rock-en-Seine festival near Paris – and led to Noel Gallagher’s decision.

As a result, the Oasis European tour has been cancelled, with claims the band did “not exist anymore.” Puzzled fans were left waiting to hear from the star himself.

Later that same night, Noel Gallagher issued a statement via the band’s website: “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

Rumours of fighting between the brothers have been rampant, as has speculation that Noel was planning to go it alone.

Brother Liam had denied the fight rumours on 11 July at a Wembley Stadium gig. He said insistently at that time: “Let me tell you now, we’re not splitting up.”

The rock band formed in 1991, and had their first real break in May of 1993 when Alan McGee spotted them performing at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow.
