New recycling scheme rolled out in U.K.

September 15, 2009

A brand new recycling scheme has just been launched in the U.K. which aims to reward houses that recycle as much of their waste as possible. The scheme has been introduced by Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Veolia Environmental Services and RecycleBank as a way to get more resident’s involved in and aware of the importance of recycling.

The Borough has done away with the more complicated system of providing households with different bins for different recyclable materials and is instead giving residents just the one, big blue bin into which all of the homes recyclable waste can go. This includes all plastics, glass, paper, metal etc. The rubbish will then be taken away to be sorted at a depot.

Cabinet Member for Sustainability for the Royal Borough, Liam Maxwell says that he hopes that by making the whole recycling process much simpler, more people will make the effort. On top of making the rubbish sorting easier households will get the chance to earn vouchers that can be exchanged for good and services. A home that excels could be rewarded up to £130 to spend at restaurants, cinemas and shops.

Maxwell sees that people would like to do more for the environment by participating in recycling schemes and hopes that the new carrot method rather than a stick method might see that happening not just in Windsor and Maidenhead but throughout the U.K. He hopes that the scheme’s success will be seen and emulated by as many other boroughs as possible.
