New hybrid computers create competition

August 21, 2009

As the personal computer market develops, market leaders like Intel are starting to find more and more competition.

British company ARM Holdings develops cost effective chips for mobile phones and as portable computing devices start to become a cross between the laptop and the mobile phone the race is on to develop the technology that will give personal computer performance on handheld devices.

Computer companies like Intel are trying to develop net books and mobile internet devices, and phone companies are constantly trying to make better handhelds that incorporate access to the internet like the Blackberry and iPhone.

So the battle is on to develop powerful chips that do not require a large amount power to run.

ARM’s director of mobile computing, Bob Morris says: “Intel has to go after this market, as the PC market is not growing. The growth market moving forward will be the mobile device market. We are closely approaching the point (if we are not there already) where people accessing the Internet from a mobile device will exceed those accessing it from a PC.”

A spokesman for Intel said that he didn’t entirely agree. “Cell phones are becoming more PC-like,” he said. “There are more and more requirements for that device to be more PC-like. Our view is that Intel is very well suited to provide that technology.”
