New crime map website crashes same day as it is launched
October 21, 2009
A website that allows users to log on and see crime rates for every street in the U.K. crashed after it was launched because of too high a demand by internet users. People trying to use the site have found themselves looking at a message explaining that the site is not available.
The new website was unveiled by David Hanson, a Home Office minister and quickly crashed due to so much pressure. A spokesperson for the Home Office said that they would iron out the problems and have the site back up as quickly as possible.
Those who use the site will now be able to access up to date information on crimes that are taking place at specific locations across the country. Mr. Hanson said that the new map would allow members of the public to monitor crime in certain areas and hold the police accountable for dealing with it. He went on to say that perceptions of crime and the reality of crime is often not the same thing. He hopes the site will provide people with the facts.
The nationwide service has been launched after the success of a similar regional crime map project put together by forty-three police forces across the country. The home Office says that these sites have been getting up to 50,000 hits every month.
