New code introduced to control schoolchildren’s behaviour on buses

November 4, 2009

New rules set to start in January will see head teachers being able to punish students who misbehave on buses whilst traveling to and from their places of education. Behaviour codes and guidelines are being given to students, parents and teachers outlining their roles in the new system.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, the deputy first minister and transport minister said that he was extremely pleased with the new powers which will now allow the establishment of a code of practice that would cover all modes of transport from buses to bicycles. The new code has been designed so that it fits with existing rules for children’s behaviour in schools across the country.

Although he welcomed the new code, the father of a twelve-year-old boy who was killed when the bus he was travelling on crashed, said that more needed to be done. He said that it was a move in the right direction and that now children and adults would be aware of their respective responsibilities. He went on to say that he would like to see the National Assembly be given the power to update the Transport Act to abolish rules which allow three children to sit on a seat built for two adults and introduce compulsory seatbelts.

The head teachers’ union NAHT Cymru has also welcomed the new code saying that they have been supporters ever since it was first suggested. They said that new measures that encouraged drivers to report bad behaviour and powers given to schools to punish such behavior should do much to improve the safety of the country’s buses.
