Murray has shot at Australian Open title
January 29, 2010
It was an uninspiring start for Britain’s number one Andy Murray as he took on Marin Cilic for a place in the Australian Open tennis final. It started to look like his plan to run Cilic around the court in order to tire him was beginning to backfire as the Croat forced Murray further and further behind the base line. However everything changed when Murray pulled off what was assuredly one of the most important shots of his career. An over the shoulder forehand from the Scot marked the point in the match when Murray decided to play like a champion. From that point on Murray recovered and eventually ended up dominating the match. Cilic fought valiantly but Murray punished his efforts with his devastating backhand.
Talking about the shot that turned the match around Murray admitted that it was important. He pointed out that at no point did he feel like he was losing his grip on the match, it was just that Cilic was the dominant player at the start. Murray admitted that in practice he had played the over-shoulder forehand many times and that although he rarely needed it in tournaments, this time it was extremely useful.
Murray now has time to relax before he faces Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. Some thought that the fact Murray was massaging his back whilst he faced Cilic might be cause for concern but Murray said that he was just a bit stiff as he expected to be at this point in the tournament.
