George Tiller, an American physician who performed late-term abortions, was described as a stubborn man who was not easily deterred from what he believed in. Over the years, he was shot, his clinic was bombed, he found himself in court on several occasions, and was called “Tiller the baby killer”.

In 1993 Dr. Tiller was shot in both arms by a zealous anti-abortionist, but the doctor insisted on returning to work the next day.

He said after the shooting: “Arms hurt, bled a little bit, but so what? I am not going to be run over and I’m not going to run out,” adding: “I belonged there and they were not going to separate me from my job.”

Tiller had four children and 10 grandchildren. He was forced to drive an armored car and had to live in a highly-secure, gated community – but refused to be intimidated.

He asserted: “What I am doing is legal, what I am doing is moral, what I am doing is ethical.”

The former Navy flight surgeon had planned to become a dermatologist, but when he took over his father’s medical practice in the conservative community of Wichita, Kansas, he found that his father had been secretly performing abortions – which were illegal at the time.

After his parents died in a plane crash, Tiller began performing abortions – which had been made legal.
