Marks and Spencers

It was the idea of a polish refugee called Michael Marks who opened a penny stall at the Leeds Kirkgate Market in1884.He sold spoons, soaps, luggage tags and various other everyday items. So successful was the stall that he expanded and by 1894 he had twelve premises and realized he needed a partner to help run the business.

He approached Thomas Spencer an accomplished bookkeeper who invested three hundred pounds to become his partner. In 1901 the first purpose built warehouse was established in Manchester and in 1903 Marks and Spencer was registered as a company with a capital of 30,000 one pound shares. The rest as they say, is history.
