Dorothy Perkins

Dorothy Perkins began life as Ladies Hosiery and Underwear Ltd in 1909, an era when ladies fashions were very segmented with society ladies preferring the Belle Époque style and the middle classes opting for high collared blouses and long skirts. By 1919 it had developed in a chain of 12 shops.

The secret of the shops success was its ability to change with the times and keep abreast of fashion trends. In 1939 the name Dorothy Perkins was adopted and the chain had grown to 39 stores. In 1966 the 250th shop was opened and the first cash registers were introduced. In 1979 Dorothy Perkins was bought by the Burton Group.
