Since its conception in June 2000 Betfair has grown into the biggest online betting exchange in the world. The company, based in Hammersmith West London, has a turnover exceeding fifty million pounds a week and boasts a customer base of over two million. The difference between a betting exchange and a traditional bookmaker is Betfair allows the gambler to bet at odds set by other punters thus cutting out the need for a traditional turf accountant.

The advantage is that a Betfair punter can offer odds using his or her own opinions rather than those of the bookmakers who have their own margins factored into the odds.
