Marks & Spencer loses to Primark and Asda
October 9, 2009
In terms of the numbers of clothes sold, Marks & Spencer has fallen behind Primark and George at Asda for the first time this year. The recession seems to have forced the consumer to look for cheaper supermarket brands and discounted clothes when deciding what to wear. Because of new stores opening throughout the country and because shoppers are becoming much more price conscious Asda now leads the clothing market with a 10.1 percent share, Primark follows closely with 9.9 percent and Marks & Spencer now sits in third place with 9.8 percent.
A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said that the figures were not all that surprising and that it was expected that bargain stores and supermarkets would draw more custom during the summer months. She went on to point out that Marks & Spencer should regain market position in the winter months when shoppers turn their attention to buying quality garments such as jumpers and coats.
Managing director of George at Asda, Anthony Thompson was over the moon with the new rankings pointing out that the company had aimed to take market share in 2011 and had managed to hit their target eighteen months early. He continued that Asda was looking to increase the quality of its clothing alongside value as he believes that the days of throw away fashion have come to an end.
