Man who killed ex whilst on bail is given life
December 23, 2009
A man who told a number of people that he intended to kill his former lover has managed to go through with the threat whilst on bail. Fifty-two-year-old Alan Entwistle stabbed thirty-one-year-old Claire Atkinson a total of thirteen times after he managed to persuade her to get into his car. He then drove the car into another vehicle in what appeared to be an attempt to take his own life.
Just one month before Entwistle was released on bail he had been arrested for kidnapping Miss Atkinson and threatening her with a knife. Miss Atkinson told detectives that her former lover had threatened to kill her because he did not want her to be with anyone if it was not him. Although Entwistle was formerly charged with false imprisonment and possession of a knife a Crown Court judge decided to release him on bail on condition that he did not have any contact with Miss Atkinson. Soon after his release he began to follow Miss Atkinson who was so scared she had her father pick her up from work in his car.
Miss Atkinson was found to be dead at the crash scene and Entwistle was arrested shortly after witnesses saw him stagger from his car. It has been confirmed that Entwistle had large amounts of ibuprofen and diazepam in his system and psychologists think he may have been suffering from murder-suicide syndrome.
Judge Anthony Russell QC called Entwistle ‘manipulative’ before handing down a sentence of twenty-one-and-a-half years. As he left the dock Entwistle said he was sorry to the public gallery from where Miss Atkinson’s family was watching the trial.
