Man in court for urinating on war memorial

January 27, 2010

A man has appeared in court to hear charges brought against him by the Crown which claim he urinated on a war memorial whilst shouting abuse at a church verger. Forty-nine-year-old Ian Marshall has admitted to urinating in public but has denied doing it on a war memorial and has denied shouting at the verger. Lisa Carlton, the Crown’s Prosecutor said that the court had to decide whether or not Mr. Marshall climbed the steps up to the war memorial on which a number of wreaths were clearly on display and, whilst steadying himself with the railings, proceeded to urinate onto the memorial.

She continued by telling the court that after the church verger had approached Mr. Marshall to have a discussion about his actions he was told in the strongest possible terms to go away. Mr. Marshall also allegedly explained to the verger that nobody was buried under the monument and that all those who were represented by the memorial were dead anyway.

The incident is alleged to have happened in Headingly, Leeds just a short time after Philip Laing, a nineteen-year-old student caused a furore when he was photographed urinating on a memorial covered with poppy wreaths while on a drunken pub crawl. Reportedly the verger mentioned this incident to Mr. Marshall who responded with some colourful language.

Abbi Whelan who is Mr. Marshall’s lawyer says that he disputes the accusations. Mr. Marshall has been asked to return to court in Leeds on April 6th when a number of witnesses will also be present to give their version of events.
