Man arrested in Hong Kong following acid attacks
January 11, 2010
A man suspected of perpetrating a series of attacks involving acid being thrown from Hong Kong rooftops onto pedestrians below may finally have been caught. The arrest of a man said to be in his early thirties took place at the weekend following and attack with two bottles of acid which has left thirty people injured. The incident occurred in one of Kowloon’s busiest shopping areas. Police have said that as well as locals and children amongst the injured were four Mongolian tourists and two American tourists. One store owner described how he heard two loud bangs and then started to smell a strange odour. He claims it was the smell that alerted him to the fact that yet another acid attack had occurred. He then describes a number of people coming into his stall for shelter, some of whom were crying.
Police hope that the man they have arrested following Saturday night’s attack is the same man who has been terrorizing Hong Kong for the past thirteen months and who is responsible for at least 107 people sustaining burns, some of them extremely serious. The man was arrested after police recovered bottle tops from a rooftop which matched the bottles that had been dropped into the market. Donald Tsang, Hong Kong’s chief executive described the attacks as infuriating. The arrest of the man is the first in relation to the acid attacks and follows an extensive police investigation and that installation of numerous CCTV cameras in an effort to capture the culprit.
