London music pub saved by public support
January 14, 2010
Iconic London music venue the Half Moon in Putney has announced that it will no longer be closing its doors at the end of the month as planned because of a nationwide campaign to keep the pub open. Because of debt problems the current tenant James Harris had said that the establishment would be closing its doors on January 31st. However after 20,000 people signed an online petition demanding that the venue remain open Young’s brewery have been convinced to settle the debt problems with Mr. Harris and keep the pub open. Last November Young’s caused an outcry when they announced plans to turn the venue into a gastro-pub. The news went national and public interest has meant that the famous stage which has had performers like U2, The Rolling Stones and The Jam play on it will remain in business.
Former tenant, Carrie Davis returned to the venue to help fight its cause. She said that the press interest and the support from the public has been astonishing. Whilst working as the bookings manager at the Half Moon Carrie managed to find out the names of all the acts that have ever performed at the venue and the walls are now lined with photographs of every single act. Carrie has returned as a partner to the pub and said that they will now work on getting top class acts in to perform for customers. She admitted that the venue had been relying on tribute bands a little too much recently.
