Liverpool airport conditions normal despite workers’ strike
August 21, 2009
Although Liverpool’s airport has been hit by a workers’ strike of indefinite length following an unresolved dispute over jobs, officials reported “business as usual”.
Officials at the John Lennon Airport (JLA) said that check-in proceeded normally and all 73 scheduled flights on the first day of the walkout were expected to depart as planned.
The industrial action was launched by approximately 150 GMB union members in protest of Servisair’s plans to make 23 workers redundant.
To compensate for the workers involved in the industrial action, Servisair has brought in extra staff to ensure that there are no travel disruptions.
An airport spokesman commented: “The handling agent has reassured the airport that robust contingency plans already in place will mean that passengers flying with those airlines who use Servisair at Liverpool will not be inconvenienced during this dispute.”
He went on to say: “Talks between the GMB union and Servisair are expected to continue to try to resolve the dispute. Of the daily passenger throughput at JLA, half of airport passengers travel with airlines, including easyJet, who use alternative handling agents to Servisair and who are not involved in this dispute.”
Andy Gower, the director of the airport, said: “Naturally we are disappointed that this planned industrial action appears to be going ahead.”
He added: “However, the reassurances we have been given by the handling agent involved mean that we expect those passengers whose airline uses Servisair to be able to get away on flights without any problems.”
