Latest food craze is to dress dishes in gold and silver
October 20, 2009
It seems as if the country has had enough of the austerity imposed by the global recession and is looking for a bit of sparkle. In food terms at least that may now be possible. The latest fad for London restaurants is producing dishes adorned with edible gold and silver. Even drinks now come with glittery, edible precious metals floating in them.
Selfridges has just announced that it will be exclusively selling edible metals so that customers can adorn their own cooking with a bit of bling. The store says that because Food Bling is tasteless it can be used with any dish, whether sweet or savoury. For just £14.99 customers can pick up a sprinkler containing 150mg of either gold or silver that can be sprinkled on even the dullest dish to give it a bit of life.
Italian restaurant owner, Laura Santtini says that even the most basic soup can be made into feast when sprinkled with a bit of gold dust. Throughout London restaurants are catching onto the demand for food dressed in precious metal. Archipelago now offers its customers quail’s eggs wrapped in gold leaf and The Eastside is doing the same with its popcorn.
With Christmas just around the corner the launch of a new way to brighten up that left over turkey is sure to be a hit.
