Last of the Summer Wine village says no to Tesco
October 14, 2009
It seems that the Yorkshire town made famous by the television series Last of the Summer Wine may just have taken on the countries largest supermarket, and won. For the moment Tesco has decided to withdraw its plans to build a superstore just outside the sleepy village of Holmfirth in West Yorkshire.
The leaders of the campaign to prevent the retail giant from going through with its plans are Bill O’Brien and Margaret Dale. Margaret says that the local community decided to take on Tesco because they didn’t want the corporate giant destroying the local community. She goes on to say that most people feel ineffectual when it comes to tackling a company as big as Tesco and this is the problem. Apathy and a belief that a large company is too powerful to confront is one of the ways that Tesco has been able to spread throughout the country, she says. By just standing up and saying no even a small community like Holmfirth can take on the one of the biggest companies in the world.
However some are less pleased about the local campaign against having a convenience store open up in the neighbourhood. Some residents would like to have a place that is open 24 hours-a-day and say that Tesco would bring much needed jobs to the area.
