John Cleese is disappointed with divorce settlement

John Cleese has voiced his disappointment over a divorce settlement that could see the actor end up poorer than his ex wife. Alyce Faye Eichelberger to whom Cleese was married for sixteen years will walk away with an estimated £12.5 million. The settlement consists of a flat in New York, a house in London, £8 million in assets and cash and £600,000 paid out annually by Cleese to his ex for the next seven years. In voicing his anger at the size of the settlement Cleese pointed out that if both he and she dropped dead today her children would be set to inherit more than his own kids.

Family lawyer, Julian Lipson said that although on paper it now looks as though Cleese’s ex wife is richer than he is the figures do not include the actors predicted future earnings. Lipson also pointed out that the divorce was conducted in California and that Cleese was always going to be hammered because he had no pre-nuptial agreement with Eichelberger. The Monty Python star met his ex when she was living with her two sons in a London council flat. Lipson said that the pay out would have been far less if the divorce had been conducted through the British court system.

Film director Michael Winner who is a close friend of John Cleese has also voiced his disappointment with the divorce settlement. He points out that Cleese has worked extremely hard to make his fortune and now most of it will end up in the hands of a woman he rescued from a council flat.
