Jenson Button is Formula One world champion

Jenson Button was ecstatic last night as he became Formula One world champion after an exciting Brazilian Grand Prix. Button started fourteenth on the grid but managed to drive aggressively enough to finish the race in sixth place. Team mate, Rubens Barrichello was expected to take the race in front of his home crowd after managing to secure poll position on the grid on Saturday in horrendous conditions as storms lashed the Sao Paulo race track.

Becoming world champion marks the culmination of a stunning come back by Button. Just under a year ago found himself out of job when Honda pulled out of Formula One when the world’s economy collapsed. Button had just signed a three-year deal with the car maker for £24 million when they made the announcement that Formula One would have to carry on without them.

Ross Brawn then took the helm and asked Button to stay on under the Brawn GP banner. He said yes and even decided to take a huge pay cut and agreed that he would finance his own expenses whilst competing around the world. Last nights result proves that his decisions were the right ones.

Button joined Formula One after Frank Williams phoned him in a pub to offer him the chance of a test drive. At the age of nineteen he became the youngest driver ever to score points in a Formula One race. Not bad considering it took him six attempts to pass his driving test.
