Italian hotel offers rooms for one cent by mistake
August 16, 2009
A four-star hotel on the outskirts of Venice is feeling the impact of mistakenly offering a romantic weekend for the ultimately low cost of one cent.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel, located in Quarto D’Altino, some 25km outside Venice, received bookings for 1,400 room nights soon after the erroneous rate appeared on its website. According to a hotel spokesman, it seems that the majority will be honoured.
Fulvio Danesin, the hotel’s sales manager, said it was originally thought a hacker had posted the offer, but later learned that someone had made the error at the US headquarters of Intercontinental Hotels Group, the Crowne Plaza’s parent company.
It was intended that the offer be for two nights at the hotel at the price of one night. Although the one cent rate was only on the website Sunday night, it was long enough for bargain hunters to make bookings through October of 2010, Danesin said. The sales manager added that the hotel is likely to lose around $129,000 due to the error.
Monica Smith, the media relations manager for the hotel group, said that 228 guests made bookings for a total of 1,400 room nights during the time the erroneous rate was posted on the website – and that all bookings would be honored.
Smith added: “Although a pricing error, IHG is committed to honoring the 1-cent rate for guests who have a valid confirmation,” but went on to say that any room booked at the lone cent rate “are nontransferable.”
