Italian girls questioned after fondling a pair of muffins
September 23, 2009
Two female Italian foreign exchange-students have been threatened with legal action after they were caught of CCTV cameras squeezing a couple of muffins. The girls were shopping in a Tesco store in Exeter when they were nabbed by a security guard as they tried to leave the store and asked to accompany him to the shop’s basement.
The seventeen-year olds were then told that they had been seen contaminating food and were handed a printed piece of paper outlining their legal options. The paper warned the girls that they could face prosecution and advised them to get in touch with a lawyer.
Colin Gott who is hosting the Italian girls whilst they stay in the U.K. says that the experience has left them distressed and in a state of shock. The two girls were released after questioning and after their carers had been contacted by members of the Tesco staff.
Gott says that it is extraordinary that the supermarket behaved in such a way saying that all that had happened was one of the girls had squeezed two muffins at the shop bakery to see how fresh they were before deciding to purchase a third one. He also said that in Italy people out shopping for food do so in a much more tactile way to shoppers in Britain. His concerns were that the girls would return home with a badly coloured image of this country which is bad news especially when the U.K. is going through such a hard time attracting tourists in the first place.
