Islamic group announces it will not march in Wootton Bassett
January 11, 2010
A possible confrontation between residents of Wootton Bassett and Islamist group Islam4UK has been averted as the groups leader announces that they do not intend to go ahead with their anti-war march through the town. Wootton Bassett has become the first stop for bodies of British soldiers being repatriated to the U.K. Islam4UK said that they wished to march through the town to highlight to people in the U.K. that it was not simply British soldiers being killed in Afghanistan. Initially there were rumours that supporters were planning to carry five-hundred empty coffins through the Wiltshire town but this has since been denied.
Since the march was announced a couple of weeks ago more than 185,000 people have signed up to a page on the networking site Facebook to express their anger at the plans. The Prime Minister condemned the idea of a march and MPs have been calling on Alan Johnson to do something to prevent the event going ahead.
MP for North Wiltshire, James Gray who has been opposed to the march ever since it was first announced said that he is extremely pleased that Islam4UK had decided to cancel their plans. Leader of the Muslim group, Anjem Choudary announced that after having discussions with other members of the Islamic community it had been decided that enough publicity for the plight of Muslims dying in Afghanistan had been garnered. He went on to say that Islam4UK had managed to reach so many ordinary people that he felt that there was nothing left to be gained by going ahead with the march.
