Harry Redknapp to appear in court for tax evasion
January 15, 2010
A long running investigation by the police into corruption in English football has resulted in Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp being accused of tax evasion. It is estimated that the sixty-two year old owes around £40,000. Mr. Redknapp voluntarily visited Bishopsgate police station in London where he has been officially charged. Mr. Redknapp’s solicitor has stated that his client has cooperated fully in the investigation and hopes that matters can be brought to a successful conclusion.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed that Mr. Redknapp has now been charged with cheating the public revenue. The CPS also added that former chairman of Portsmouth City Football Club, Mr. Milan Mandaric has been jointly charged. The CPS says that the charges have been made because of two payments made by Mr. Mandaric to Mr. Redknapp whilst he was manager at Portsmouth City. The allegations are that the payments totaling 183,000 which were made via a Monaco bank account and were linked to Mr. Redknapp’s employment evaded the required tax and national insurance contributions. The alleged tax evasion was uncovered by a joint investigation undertaken by HM Revenue and Customs and the City of London Police. Seventy-one year old Mr. Mandaric is now chairman of Leicester City Football Club. Both he and Mr. Redknapp are due to appear in court to answer the charges against them on February 11th.
