Gordon Brown promises free laptops to low income families
January 11, 2010
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that he wishes to see broadband internet access and laptops rolled out to poorer families for free in order that those families can be hooked up to school networks. Speaking in front of and international education forum he said that he wanted to see more than 270,000 free laptops in the hands of families who are on a low a income. To make sure that this would happen he said that he would make £300 million available to the scheme to help out poorer families.
Mr. Brown pointed out that the scheme would give parents more control over their children’s schooling. He illustrated his point by saying that if a father missed a parents evening because he had to work late then he would be able to catch up on how his children were doing at a convenient time for him simply by going online and linking up to the school’s website. Mr. Brown also pointed out that it would make teaching and learning in the home easier as parents could be told which subjects their children potentially need to work harder at. By giving out free laptops and free internet access Gordon Brown will be one step closer to delivering his promise that all parents will be able to monitor their children’s progress at school on the internet. He pointed out that it was families who came together to do their learning together reaped the rewards together.
