Google is not threatening to leave China
January 18, 2010
In a post on its official blog page internet search engine giant Google has scotched rumours that it has decided to pull out of China. Instead Google have announced that they intend to talk to the Chinese government about issues such as relaxing the restrictions it puts on internet searches. Google announced last week that it had been the victim of attacks by very sophisticated hackers within China and that these hackers had managed to steal information. Following the announcement a number of sources came forward claiming that Google had decided that it would move operations out of China.
The speculation about Google’s future in China has set the internet world on fire across the country. Those using Twitter have been saying that Google News has been blocked and claiming that the strength of China’s firewalls have already been increased to allow less access to information. There have been threats by Google to remove the filters in place on Google.cn but those filters appear to have remained in place.
When the Chinese authorities got wind of the rumours that the most popular search in the world was about to quit their country they didn’t seem overly concerned. Beijing suggested there may be a number of ways to fix the issue but also pointed out that any foreign company operating within the borders of China would have to operate according to Chinese law. Google has always insisted that even though there are many restrictions on how their search engine is allowed to operate in China it does offer the Chinese people wider access to information.
