Google announces Fast Flip

September 15, 2009

Google is launching yet another way that users can read the news. The new Fast Flip will allow those browsing the news to read it like they would a newspaper by flipping through the pages. Google’s new application displays thumbnails of the front pages of various publications and will allow readers to click those thumbnails to be taken to the publication’s website. Krishna Bharat at Google said that Fast flip will allow readers to access the articles they want without having to wait for each new page to download. She said that people wouldn’t expect to have to wait a few seconds before turning the page of a magazine, so why should it be different with web news pages.

Some users have complained that the new system is actually more difficult to use than Google News pointing to the fact that the rendering of the thumbnail news stories is poor and that they would rather see headlines, not just miniature versions of the article’s pages.

One of the ways in which Google has decided to help bring revenues to the publications that feature on its site is to offer some of the revenues made through advertising. Google says that if people can flip through articles more quickly then they will be opening up more pages with ads on them and thus more revenue can go to the publications themselves.

The new Fast Flip service will roll out to the iPhone and mobile Android devices where it is expected to help users have better access to the news.
