Going Gray with IKEA

August 7, 2009

I’m thinking about letting myself go gray. And while I sometimes think the checkout lines at IKEA may contribute to the increasing number of gray hairs on my head, this time I’m not talking about my hair. I’m talking about my home.

According to IKEA, gray is the hot new neutral. And, while at first I was a little hesitant, I’m starting to warm up to this cool colour. Before you dismiss the colour gray as being too drab, take a minute to consider these great gray furniture pieces and fabrics.

Sometimes gray can feel cold and modern, which can be nice but isn’t my style, but the Edland chest at IKEA has a classical look that I really like. It also comes in a dressing table, 5-drawer chest, wardrobe, nightstand and linen cabinet.

If a new piece of gray furniture seems like too big of a commitment, test the gray colour in smaller doses with some of IKEA’s gray fabrics. Fans of toile, for example, might like the cool Cecelia fabric covered with birds that remind me of an updated take on the classic pattern. The gray floral pattern on the Alvine Kvist duvet cover and pillowcases is another modern twist on a traditional pattern.

So what do you think? Would you decorate your home with gray fabrics and accessories or is it too dull for you?
