Gmail suffers second glitch in a month
September 25, 2009
For the second time in a month, Google has experienced technical difficulties with its Gmail service that has left customers unable to properly access their accounts. At the beginning of September the service had an outage that lasted for nearly two hours and meant that anyone needing to get into their accounts had to do so by using a third party like Microsoft Outlook.
Although not quite as severe, this most recent outage only hit a small subset of Gmail users according to Google, it does nothing to boost confidence in its users. Many are likely to be wondering just how reliable web based software is and this is potentially bad for Google who are trying to market its systems as a better alternative to the off the shelf products produced by companies such as Microsoft.
The recent outage affected Google Contacts and caused many to experience a sluggish service. Google say that they provided these customers with a way to work around the problems and had resumed normal service in around two and a half hours.
In February this year Google installed new software in their systems which set off a bug that resulted in many Gmail users around the world being unable to access their accounts for up to twenty-four hours.
Just earlier this week Google News users were having technical problems with the service, a problem that took two hours to fix.
As Google tries to compete with IBM and Microsoft to gain a share of the business market, it is doing itself no favours by crashing every few weeks. The latest outage will once again call into question just how reliable cloud computing technology really is.
