Frommer boycotts Arizona

August 21, 2009

The founder of Frommer’s travel guides, Arthur Frommer, has announced that he will not travel to Arizona and has hinted that others should follow his lead.

He made the announcement after seeing protesters outside a building in Phoenix where Barrack Obama was giving a speech openly showing that they were carrying guns. Frommer called the men “thugs” and “extremists” and said that he was “shocked beyond measure” to see a man defend his right to bear arms whilst holding an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.

Frommer wrote on his web site: “I not only believe such practices are a threat to the future of our democracy, but I am firmly convinced that they would also endanger my own personal safety there.” He went on to say: “And therefore I will cancel any plans to vacation or otherwise visit in Arizona until I learn more. And I will begin thinking about whether tourists should safeguard themselves by avoiding stays in Arizona.”

The mayor of Phoenix Phil Gordon spoke by phone with Arthur Frommer along with head of the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau, Steve Moore. Gordon invited Frommer to travel to Phoenix to clear things up and pointed out that although they support the right to bear arms “Phoenix is one of the safest major cities in the United States.”
