Footballer accused of breaking woman’s nose

October 27, 2009

A jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court has been hearing a case against a Premier League football player. Marlon King, who plays for Wigan Athletic now, has been accused of breaking a woman’s nose with a single punch after she spurned his sexual advances. King, who was on loan to Hull City at the time of the incident, says that the whole thing is a case of mistaken identity and strongly denies the charges. The alleged incident took place in a central London bar last December.

Prosecutor, Roger Daniells-Smith says that his client, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was out drinking at the Soho Revue Bar when Mr. King approached the group and started to inappropriately touch the woman. She asked him to stop touching her explaining to him that she did not think it was very nice, after which he turned his attention to other female members of the group. It is alleged that after they also asked him to desist he returned to the victim and proceeded to stroke her hair. After being to once again to stop Mr. King allegedly used the classic line, don’t you know who I am? The woman then pushed Mr. King away. He allegedly then took a step backwards before punching the woman square on the nose. Mr. King allegedly told the woman that she was not in his league just before throwing the punch which broke her nose.

Daniells-Smith says that there was no way the punch was meant as self-defense and that the act was one of gratuitous violence. The case continues.
