Owners of Nintendo Wii consoles could soon be watching streamed films as well as playing games through the machines as a deal is struck with Netflix in the U.S. The company has already signed deals with Microsoft and Sony as manufacturers attempt to position the games consol as the predominant piece of hardware in the country’s living rooms. Screen Digest’s broadband media analyst, Marie Bloomfield says that the move is an indication that consoles are trying to exploit as many of the options open to them as possible in order to enhance their appeal to the buying public. She also explains that with the advent of cheap broadband companies are now able to deliver more content to their consoles.

The Nintendo Wii is the biggest selling games console in the world and Netflix point out that they will now have the opportunity to offer their film streaming service to more people than ever. Netflix is currently the largest supplier of DVDs via the mail in the U.S. The company is similar to Lovefilm in the U.K. Simon Calver who is the DVD provider’s chief executive says that he is excited by the possibilities that are opening up for streaming video and television programmes into people’s homes. Although he did not disclose any names Mr. Calver said that Lovefilm was in talks with companies about providing a similar service to the Netflix model in the U.K. He said that the next year would see some extremely interesting developments.
