Fashion Icon Alexander McQueen Dies

February 12, 2010

The body of iconic British designer Alexander McQueen was found hanged in his Central London home on Thursday. The 40-year-old had been grieving since February 2 when his mother passed, as they were very close, and was suppose to be at her funeral today. The designer is also said to have been struggling through a recent break up and pressure to complete his autumn/winter collection for launch in Paris next month.

The British fashion industry takes a major loss with McQueen’s death, as he was one of the most respected and most commercially successful designers in the business. His suicide also puts a shadow over Fashion Weeks – his show was canceled at New York Fashion Week on Thursday, while London Fashion Week is starting just next week.

McQueen had been showing some erratic behavior recently, and his colleagues and friends became worried for him. He had let all of his followers on Twitter know that his mother passed early last week, and then later said that life has to go on. However, he had a bad week (according to his Twitter page), but he was glad that his friends had been there.

Although people noticed that he wasn’t taking things too well, they were all still surprised when he was found dead. The company said in a statement that they are devastated by McQueen’s death and share the sense of grief and shock with his family. Staff leaving the company’s headquarters were too upset to talk about it.

Meanwhile, Twitter has become a vice for celebrities to voice their sorrow of the designer’s passing – as it has in the past. Shoppers have even expressed their condolences by leaving flowers and candles outside his shops. A spokesperson says that all of his stores will be closed for a while as they deal with the loss of their beloved boss.
