Families choose to holiday during term time
August 24, 2009
Tesco Travel Money has just conducted a survey which suggests that nearly one in five families intend to ignore recommendations by the government and take a family holiday during term time.
The attraction of low prices and the fact that the U.K. had no summer to speak of means that there will be a growing trend in family holidays this autumn as children are supposed to be going back to school.
Emma Cripwell from Kids in the Med says that their family bookings are up 10% on the same time last year. She suggests that many parents are seeing other families going away during term time and are deciding to follow suit.
“It’s a no-brainer,” she says. “Particularly as many parents feel that their kids learn as much by spending a week abroad as they would in the classroom.”
And it seems that many holiday firms are tapping into the idea of offering cheap breaks outside of traditional holidays. In Greece the Sani Resort is offering a 20% reduction on the price of accommodation along with a kids-go-free offer.
Mumsnet.com, a parenting website, also conducted a poll and found that families just couldn’t afford the prices of holidays quoted during the school break. 50% said that they would be taking a trip during term time.
Although parents are allowed to remove their children from school for up to 10 days a year, they can also be fined up to £2,500 if a child’s absence from school is “unauthorised”.
