Although the new head of MI6 has the most advanced security technology in the world available to him and he has had a career distinguished by keeping state secrets, his family life has been exposed to millions by a page his wife created on a popular social networking site.

Lady Shelley Sawers, the wife of the new MI6 chief, Sir John Sawers, has made her family’s private life public in her enthusiasm for Facebook.

She published intimate family photographs and personal details of their life on her Facebook page, including a candid shot of her husband at the beach in his Speedo trunks and one of herself with daughter Corinne recreating a scene from Cabaret.

Her regrettable lapse in judgment comes at a time that her husband prepares to take over the helm of the Secret Intelligence Service in November – a role that places him in charge of all of Britain’s overseas spying operations.

The posting by Lady Sawers has made public some potentially compromising details about where the family lives, works and holidays – as well as who their closest friends are.

She unfortunately failed to utilise the privacy protection available for her webpage, meaning that as many as 200 million Facebook users have access to the information.

The slip-up has caused widespread concern that the safety of the Sawers family and that of their friends may have been compromised.
