On Wednesday, at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, a neo-Nazi gunman shot and killed a security guard before he was seriously wounded by return gunfire.

The shooting occurred just hours before US Attorney General Eric Holder, the first African-American to hold that position, was scheduled to attend a play honoring Anne Frank at the museum.

James Von Brunn, an 88-year-old retiree, is a notorious white supremacist, who maintains a website on anti-Semitic and racist themes, and has written a book on similar topics.

Witnesses at the scene said that the gunman arrived alone, parking his red SUV outside the museum in the middle of traffic. The museum is located on Washington’s Mall, not far from the White House. They said he then walked into the museum with a rifle in clear view.

When he entered the museum he was challenged by a security guard. He opened fire, and shot security guard Stephen T Johns, fatally wounding him. Other guards called for him to put his rifle down, and moments later shot him. Von Brunn was taken to a local hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition.

One of the witnesses was former US Secretary of Defense William Cohen, whose wife was the producer of the play that was to be performed at the museum last evening.
