Eddie Izzard runs 43 marathons in 51 days

September 17, 2009

Comedian Eddie Izzard completed a 1,100 mile run across the U.K. by running into Trafalgar Square in the pouring rain. The run saw Izzard complete forty-three marathons in just fifty-one days as a fundraiser for the charity Sport Relief. He topped the feat off by declaring that sometime in the next ten to fifteen years he might run for parliament in either Westminster of Brussels.

Izzard has already raised £200,000 for charity and has said that although he is ready to sleep for a week he is determined not to give up on the running and would like to do at least a couple of long runs every week.

When asked about his intention to run for a position in parliament he replied that he liked to make long announcements and that he didn’t want to give up on his career just yet as he had worked so hard for it.

Izzard who is preparing for a forty-four day stand-up tour next month said that his legs and body hurt and that he was very tired. He also said that he had lost his toenails and had many blisters and that finishing was a bit like science fiction. When asked how he managed to keep going, sometimes having to put in up to thirty-one miles a day with only one day off every week, he replied that it was all about mind over matter. He said that he compared it to the Second World War. People had to do extraordinary things then, he said. If you imagine that you are going to do something that is rather extreme you just go ahead and do it.
