Easyjet leaves East Midlands
September 4, 2009
easyJet have decided to halt its East Midland operations and reduce flights from Luton airport by 20%. The low-cost airline said that it will move its aircraft to more economically viable airports throughout Europe. The company pointed to dissatisfaction with Luton’s inability to recognize the economic realities of the current recession for its decision.
easyJet claim that charges at Luton have risen by 25% over the last three years and that it could not see any justification for this. Andy Harrison, easyJet’s chief executive said that he was disappointed that Luton hadn’t made more of an effort in making sure that jobs were not lost at the airport. Luton also claimed to be disappointed but pointed out that in their opinion their commercial rates were competitive.
easyJet say that they will do their best to ensure that employees affected by the decision were relocated to other airports in the network but acknowledged the fact that some would be unable to move elsewhere in the U.K. or abroad.
Meanwhile, Ryanair has said that because of easyJet’s departure it will look into expanding its service at East Midlands airport.
easyJet have reassured those who have booked flights from Luton and East Midlands that they will not be affected before the end of the year and that it will inform passengers well ahead of time of any changes in the schedule.
