David Cameron proposes moves for more female MPs

October 21, 2009

David Cameron has angered some Tory party members by announcing that in an attempt to get more women running local Conservative organizations the party would now be sending out lists of approved candidates from which local organizations would have to choose their representatives. He went on to say that he would not shy away from providing all female lists if he thought a seat should be held by a woman.

The new lists will be sent out in January when MPs decide whether or not they will be standing down. It is thought that the number of those electing to stand down next year might be a little higher than usual in the wake of the MP’s expenses scandals.

Jenny Combe who is a member of the Devizes Conservative Association says that she does not agree that someone should win a seat just because they are female. She went on to say that she had never used her sex to forward her political career and labeled the move as reverse sexism.

Mr. Cameron has defended the move by saying that he thought it was a problem for British politics as a whole and would do everything in his power to rectify the imbalance.
