Dance-off scrapped for Strictly Come Dancing semi-final
December 9, 2009
The BBC has announced that the dance-off stage of this weekends Strictly Come Dancing semi-final will not be happening. The move will mean that the public will have more of a say about which couple will not be dancing in the shows final. On previous shows the format has been that the two couples with the lowest scores have a chance to perform again for the judges with the pair who score the least going home. This week, it will be the pair who score the least amount of points who are shown the door immediately. In the event of a tie for bottom place it will now be the public who has most of the say.
Going on previous performances the news is likely to favour Chris Hollins, the BBC news reader because the public tends to like his dancing more than the judges do. Ricky Whittle however has always done better with the judges than with the public so is less likely to be pleased about the announcement.
This year’s semi-final will also be unusual for having only three couples left in the competition instead of four. Athlete Jade Johnson announced that she would have to pull out of the competition because of a knee injury.
Judges Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon both said that they thought it was a good idea to let the public have a greater say in who should stay and who should go because the difference in the level of performance by the three remaining couples was probably going to be quite small.
