Courtney Love no longer has custody of her daughter

December 16, 2009

For reasons that have not yet been made clear Courtney Love has lost custody of her daughter Frances Bean Cobain for a second time. The seventeen-year-old will now be under the care of Kurt Cobain’s mother and sister. Love first lost Frances in 2003 when the Los Angeles County Department of Family Services felt it was necessary to step in after Love had accidently taken an over dose of the drug OxyContin. He daughter was eleven at the time and was handed over to the care of Kurt Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor.

Keith A. Fink, Love’s lawyer has been quick to shoot down speculation that she might have had a drug relapse by pointing out that his client had been clean for a number of years now. He went on to say that Frances had simply decided that she wanted to move in with her grandmother for the time being. Wendy O’Connor and her daughter, Kurt Cobain’s sister Kimberly Dawn Cobain will now be in charge of Frances. However this control will not extend to having any power over the trust fund set up by the Nirvana front man for his daughter before he died.

Love has spoken about the difficulty of bringing up Frances as a single parent after Kurt Cobain took his life in 1994. She has said that she loves her daughter and that she and her husband had both wanted Frances very much and were determined to do the best they could in bringing her up. Frances has pointed out in the past that she is not her parents and did not want to spend her life in their shadows.
