Britain’s retailers will be breathing a sigh of relief after this weekend’s cold weather did little to deter shoppers from making a last minute dash to the shops before the Christmas holidays this week. John Lewis actually announced that the cold weather had been excellent news for its clothing department as customers flocked to get their hands on coats, scarves and gloves. The company said that this year it had managed record sales over three consecutive weeks so far in December.

Capital Shopping Centres said that Saturday had proved to be the busiest day of the year so far saying that customers visiting centres such as Gateshead’s Metrocentre, Glasgow’s Braehead and Lakeside in Essex had risen by 3 percent.

Commercial director at Capital Shopping Centres, Trevor Pereira said that the last weekend before Christmas was always going to be busy as people who have not yet done their Christmas shopping tend to panic. He went on to say that traditional gifts such as gadgets, toys and perfume were all selling well this year. John Lewis said that it had seen a spike in board games and electronic games pointing out that this Christmas people look like they will be entertaining each other at home.

Credit card experts predict that a record amount will be put on plastic this year and head of ATMs at Sainsbury’s Finance, Alex Blake has said that he predicts a record amount of cash to be withdrawn from cash dispensers over the festive period.
