Cloud of giant bubbles could float above the Olympics

November 13, 2009

A design submitted to City Hall as part of Boris Johnson’s competition to build a lasting monument to the London Olympic Games could see towers topped with inflatable bubbles erected above Stratford’s Olympic Park. The designs have been submitted by a group of architects from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and although the designs have not been completely finalised yet it is thought that a number of towers would be erected containing stairs lifts and ramps to take people up to the viewing bubbles. The bubbles themselves would be made from a super strong plastic that was used during the Beijing Olympics in the construction of the Aquatic Centre.

Members of the public would be able to enter the bubbles and walk out onto a membrane from where they would have unprecedented views of the Olympic Park and of the city of London. It is also planned that information would be displayed on the bubbles such as fixture times and race results. Following the Olympics the digital bubbles would display weather information and traffic news.

City Hall has not yet confirmed whether the MIT bubble idea has made the shortlist of designs being considered for the Olympic Park. However it is known that the erection nicknamed Boris Johnson’s piffle tower has not made the final few. It is widely speculated that the funding for the monument chosen is to come from steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. It is also rumoured the number of entries left on the shortlist can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
